2025 Oscars: All The (35+) Records That Could Be Broken!

Ahead of the 97th Academy Awards, VegasInsider.com has updated its list of 35+ records that could be broken during the ceremony this Sunday.

To highlight a few of the records that could be broken at the 2025 Oscars, “Emilia Pérez” which received 13 nominations could tie or break the record for the most Oscars won by a single film in one night (current record: 11) as well as the record for the most Oscars won by a non English-speaking film in one night (current record: 4). Sean Baker or Jacques Audiard, who both received 4 nominations in various categories, could tie Walt Disney’s record for the most Oscar wins in a single night (4).

Timothée Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”) could break Adrien Brody’s record and become the youngest actor to win in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category. Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) could become only the second black actress to ever win in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category and the first one in more than 20 years as well as the youngest EGOT recipient ever. Fernanda Torres (“I’m Still Here”) could become the first Brazilian to win for an acting performance. Sebastian Stan (“The Apprentice) could become the first Romanian to win in the Best Actor category while Isabella Rossellini (“Conclave”) could become the first Italian actress to win in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category. Lastly, Diane Warren could get rid of her record as the most nominated individual without a competitive win at the Oscars – “The Journey” from “The Six Triple Eight” was Warren’s 16th nomination in the Best Original Song category.

25+ Records That Could Be Broken At the 2025 Academy Awards ceremony: 

OVERALL

Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) could become the youngest person to achieve a competitive EGOT status, thus winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony, at the age of 38 – she won her Tony for Best Actress in a Musical for “The Color Purple”, a Grammy in the Best Musical Theatre Album category with “The Color Purple” cast & a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program, so the Oscar is the only award she is missing to become an EGOT. As of today, the record for the youngest competitive EGOT winner is held by songwriter Robert Lopez, who completed his EGOT at the age of 39

“Emilia Pérez” which received 13 nominations could tie or break the record for the most Oscars won by a single film in one night – the record is currently held by 3 films that managed to win 11 Oscars in one night – “Ben-Hur”, “Titanic” & “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”. “Emilia Pérez” would need to win 11 Oscars to tie the record and 12 Oscars to surpass the record

“Emilia Pérez” which received 13 nominations could tie or break the record for the most Oscars won by a non English-speaking film in one night – the record is currently held by 4 films that managed to win 4 Oscars each: “Fanny and Alexander”, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, “Parasite” & “All Quiet On The Western Front”

Sean Baker or Jacques Audiard could tie Walt Disney’s record for the most Oscar wins in a single night – Disney won 4 awards in 1954 and both Baker & Audiard are nominated in 4 categories at the 2025 Oscars, Baker for “Anora”: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Editing & Best Original Screenplay & Audiard for “Emilia Pérez”: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Song & Best Adapted Screenplay

Diane Warren could finally get rid of her record as the most nominated individual without a competitive win at the Oscars – Warren has been nominated in the Best Original Song category record-breaking 16 times which makes her the most nominated individual without a competitive win, regardless of a category (in a tie with a recording mixer Greg P.Russell) – Warren is nominated for the song “The Journey” from “The Six Triple Eight”

Best Picture

“Emilia Pérez” or “I’m Still Here” could become only the second non English-language movie to win Best Picture following “Parasite” – “Emilia Pérez” would become the first movie in Spanish to win while “I’m Still Here” would become the first movie in Portuguese to win Best Picture

“The Substance” could become only the second horror film to ever win Best Picture following “The Silence of the Lambs” which won Best Picture more than 30 years ago in 1992

“Dune: Part Two” could become only the third sequel to win Best Picture, following “The Godfather Part II” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”

“Wicked” could become only the third fantasy film to win Best Picture following “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” & “The Shape Of Water”

“Anora” could become the 4th movie to win Palme D’Or from the Cannes Festival as well as the Best Picture Oscar (thus joining “The Lost Weekend”, “Marty” & “Parasite”)

Dede Gardner & Jeremy Kleiner (“Nickel Boys”) could tie the record for the producer with the most Best Picture wins at the Oscars – the current record of 3 wins is shared by Sam Spiegel & Saul Zaentz and a win in 2025 for “Nickel Boys” would be Kleiner and Gardner’s third since they previously won for “12 Years a Slave” & “Moonlight”; additionally, by winning, Dede Gardner would become the first female producer to win Best Picture on three occasions (as of now, she is the only woman that has managed to win Best Picture twice and she is tied with Kathleen Kennedy as the most nominated woman in the Best Picture category with 8 nominations)

Best Director 

Coralie Fargeat (“The Substance”) could become the first French female director to win in the Best Director category

Best Actor in a Leading Role

Timothée Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”) could become the youngest actor to win in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category – the current holder of the record is Adrien Brody who was 29 years, 11 months old when he won for “The Pianist” and Chalamet will be 29 years, 2 months old; additionally, Chalamet who is French-American would become only the second French actor to win in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category following Jean Dujardin 

Sebastian Stan (“The Apprentice”) could become the first Romanian actor to win in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category (Stan was born in Constanta, Romania and he is Romanian-American) and the first Romanian to win for a leading acting performance

Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”) could join an elite group of 10 actors who have won the Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar 2 or more times – Brody previously won for “The Pianist” in 2003 so a win in 2025 would be his second

Best Actress in a Leading Role

Karla Sofía Gascón (“Emilia Pérez”) could become the first openly transgender actress to win in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category (or any acting category for that matter) and she could also become the first openly transgender individual to win an Oscar 

Karla Sofía Gascón (“Emilia Pérez”) could become the first Spanish actress to win in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category and she would also become the first Spanish actress to win for a leading acting performance – the only two Spanish actors who managed to win in acting categories are Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, but both of them won in the supporting acting categories (Bardem won for “No Country For Old Men” and Cruz won for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”) 

Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) could become only the second black actress to ever win in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category and the first one in more than 20 years – the first and only black Best Actress in a Leading Role winner is Halle Berry who won for Monster’s Ball at the 2002 ceremony

Fernanda Torres (“I’m Still Here”) could become the first Brazilian actress to ever win in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category, the first Latin American actress to ever win in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category, and she could also become the first Brazilian to win for an acting performance (Torres would be only the second Brazilian-born Oscar winner ever following Luciana Arrighi who won the Oscar in 1994 in the Best Art Direction category for “Howards End”)

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Yura Borisov (“Anora”) could become the first Russian actor to win in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category 

Best Actress in Supporting Role

Isabella Rossellini (“Conclave”) could become the first Italian actress to win in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category

Isabella Rossellini (“Conclave”) could also become the first actress in history to win an Oscar for an acting performance following a mother’s win for acting (Rossellini’s mother is legendary actress Ingrid Bergman who won 3 acting Oscars). Meanwhile, the only child who went on to win an acting Oscar following their parent winning an Oscar for acting is Angelina Jolie who won the Best Supporting Actress for “Girl, Interrupted” following her father Jon Voight’s win in the Best Actor category for “Coming Home”. Jane Fonda and her father Henry Fonda also both won Oscars for acting, however, in this instance, Jane Fonda was the first to win 2 Oscars for Best Actress in a Leading Role (“Klute” & “Coming Home”) and her father won his Best Actor Oscar for “On Golden Pond” years later. Additionally, Liza Minelli won the Best Actress Oscar for “Cabaret” following her mother’s win, however, Judy Garland’s Oscar was a special non-competitive honorary Juvenile Academy Award recognizing young performers

Best Cinematography

Ed Lachman (“Maria”) could break the record for the oldest person to win in the Best Cinematography category – currently, the record is held by Conrad L. Hall who won posthumously at the age 76 – by the time of the ceremony, Hall would have been 76 years, 9 months old, but Lachman will be 76 years, 11 months old at the time of the 2025 Academy Awards ceremony, which would make him the oldest winner in the category

Best Original Screenplay 

Mona Fastvold (“The Brutalist”) could become the first Norwegian to win in the Best Original Screenplay category (or any screenwriting category for that matter)

Best Costume Design

Paul Tazewell (“Wicked”) could become the first black male costume designer to win an Oscar in the Best Costume Design category and only the second black designer to ever win following Ruth E. Carter who won 2 Oscars in the category for the “Black Panther” franchise

Linda Muir (“Nosferatu”) could become the first Canadian to win in the Best Costume Design category at the Oscars, while Lisy Christl (“Conclave”) could become the first German to win in the category

Best Original Song 

Diane Warren (“The Journey” from “The Six Triple Eight”) could finally get rid of her record as the most nominated individual without a win – Warren has been nominated in the Best Original Song category record-breaking 16 times which not only makes her the most nominated individual in the Best Original Song category without a win, but it also makes her the overall most nominated individual without a competitive win, regardless of a category (in a tie with a recording mixer Greg P. Russell) 

Jacques Audiard (“El Mal” from “Emilia Pérez”) could become the first individual to win in the Best Original Song category the same year that he is nominated in the Best Director category for the same movie 

Elton John (“Never Too Late” from “Elton John: Never Too Late”) could join a rare group of 9 songwriters who won the Best Original Song Oscar 3 or more times – John has won two times in the past (for “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” & “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again”) so a win for “Never Too Late” in 2025 would be John’s third victory

Best Editing

Sean Baker (“Anora”) could become only the third director to win an Oscar for editing a movie they also directed, joining James Cameron (who won for editing “Titanic”) and Alfonso Cuarón (who won for editing “Gravity”), however, Sean Baker could become the first to win for a sole editing credit since both Cameron and Cuarón won as part of a group

Dávid Jancsó (“The Brutalist”) could become the first Hungarian to win in the Best Editing category at the Oscars

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Frances Hannon (“Wicked”) could join a rare group of 9 make-up artists to win 2 or more times in the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category at the Oscars  – Hannon first won in 2014 for “The Grand Budapest Hotel” so a win in 2025 for “Wicked” would be her second victory

Best Sound

Richard King (“Dune: Part Two”) could tie the record for the most wins in the Sound categories at the Oscars – King has won 4 Oscars in the Best Sound Editing category before Best Sound Editing & Best Sound Mixing categories were merged into Best Sound category, and he could win his 5th Oscar in the Best Sound Category for “Dune: Part Two”, thus tying the record of sound engineers Fred Hynes, Douglas Shearer & Thomas T. Moulton who won 5 Oscars in the Best Sound Mixing category

Best International Feature

Brazil (“I’m Still Here”) or Latvia (“Flow”) could win their first Oscar in the Best International Feature category

Best Animated Feature

Chris Sanders (“The Wild Robot”) could get rid of his record as the most nominated individual without a win in the Best Animated Feature category – “The Wild Robot” is his 4th nomination following nominations for “Lilo & Stitch”, “How To Train Your Dragon” & “The Croods” but he has yet to win; on the other hand, Nick Park (“Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl”) or Mark Nielsen (“Inside Out 2”) could join a rare group of 8 people who have won 2 or more times in the Best Animated Feature category – Park previously won for “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” in 2006, while Nielsen won for “Toy Story 4” in 2020

Pixar could increase its record as the studio with the most wins in the Best Animated Feature category – “Inside Out 2” could be their 12th victory

“Wallace & Gromit” or “Inside Out” could join Toy Story and become the only franchise with multiple wins in the Best Animated Feature category (“Toy Story 3” & “Toy Story 4” both won while “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” and “Inside Out” were the first movies to win and “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” & “Inside Out 2” both have a chance to win in 2025

“Flow” could become the first dialogue-free movie to win in the Best Animated Feature category at the Oscars
