One thing that everyone loves is going to the movies. But if you have an elderly loved one that has a hard time getting around now or can’t hear or see as well as they used to, leaving their home or assisted living facility to go to the movie theater can be more than they’re willing or able to do. Luckily, you can simulate this experience for them in the comfort of their own home.

To help you see how this can be done, here are three tips for creating an at-home movie night for your elderly loved one.

Make It A Whole Experience

Since your elderly loved one can’t physically go to the movie theater and have that experience there, the next best thing is for you to bring that entire experience home to them. While this doesn’t have to be something extravagant, putting in a little more effort than normal to help them have a great time will be greatly appreciated.

Some great ideas for turning your home into a movie theater experience for your elderly loved one could include decorating the space like a movie theater, having movie theater-style treats at a concession stand, bringing in some cushions and other comfortable accessories to help them feel nice and cozy during the movie, and getting the lighting and audio right for the show.

Consider A Theme

Another great idea for doing an at-home movie for an elderly loved one is to pick a theme that you incorporate throughout the whole evening and movie event.

Especially for your older family members, choosing a theme based on a decade of the past can be a great idea. If your loved one was a child in the 1940s, 1950s, or 1960s, you can choose a movie from that time period and consider dressing yourself and any other guests in clothes from that era. You can also get specific treats that may have been popular during this time as part of your concessions.

Choose A Movie They’ll Love

Picking the movie for your at-home movie night can be a challenge.

There are a few different ways that you can go about doing this. If you want to choose a movie that you know they love and have fond memories of, this can be a great movie to pick to help give your elderly loved one a bit of a boost in their morale. On the other hand, you can also choose a movie that they haven’t seen yet but that’s in a genre you know they love and maybe has actors or other themes that they’re big fans of.

If you want to create a great at-home movie experience for your elderly loved one, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you execute on this idea.
